Overview
With MediaIsland website software you can upload, manage, and share all your media on the Web, turning your existing website into your very own Online Media Portal! Because MediaIsland contains all three of our great web products (ImageIsland, AudioIsland, and VideoIsland), it allows you to do everything those products offer and more! Easy Installation
To install MediaIsland, all you need is a website and a connection to the Internet. There is no database to install, no plugins, and no desktop software to worry about. Once you have your website and server setup correctly*, you are ready to install the product. MediaIsland consists of a single folder of scripting web pages. So to install it on your site, simply upload (or FTP) the MediaIsland folder to your web server. That's it! You are now ready to start adding your media to the server. Simply open a web browser, surf to your MediaIsland folder in your site, and start uploading immediately!
Getting Started
It's easy to get started with MediaIsland! Once installed, just open MediaIsland in your web browser of choice. The screenshots to the right show sample web pages for all three Managers in MediaIsland: Images, Audio, and Video Managers. You can see the interface and web design is very simple. Most of the navigational elements are clickable dropdown elements. And the layout is designed for maximizing the display of your media. And, all features and functions inside MediaIsland are limited to a handful of icons and toolsets. We only provide whats needed to get the job done without overwhelming you with options you do not need. You want to get to your multimedia, right? With its simple media player listing and clickable toolsets, you will find MediaIsland is easier to use than any media software out there.
Uploading Multimedia
Uploading multimedia has never been easier. Using a simple upload web page inside MediaIsland, you can start uploading media items directly to your website. MediaIsland contains three main media areas: ImageManager, AudioManager, and VideoManager. These three allow you to upload photos, audio, and video, as well as manage and view those items over the Web. In the upload area for each of these modules, you will see ten upload fields, and a submit button. Each module type allow you to upload different media mime types. For example the ImageManager allows you to upload JPG, GIF, PNG, and BMP's. To upload an item, simply choose media you wish to upload from your desktop by clicking "browse" buttons in the ten upload buttons found in the uploads page, then click "upload" to upload these media files from your computer to the server. Please be patient while your media files upload to your site. Our new revolutionary Loading Bar is very helpful in letting you know how much time it will take to upload, extract, and save larger media items to the server. The Audio and Video uploaders also extract media file data from the files, when available, and create jpeg thumbnails for certain video types. When uploading is complete, the upload page will refresh the page and show you a list of the media files you have uploaded today. You can click them to play them in this page, or go view them in each manager module's listing area.
Playing & Managing Media
As mentioned above, each of the 3 Managers in MediaIsland allows you to manage a different media mime type (i.e. photos, audio, and video). Some of the things you can do with your media in these areas include: Uploading, editing, resizing, rotating, deleting, naming, viewing, and playing. You can also grow your online library as large as you need, using these powerful manager modules. A special paging system built into the viewer in these modules will allow you to manage thousands of media items easily, and allow you to quickly surf through dozens of media at a time. Different views and sorting features also make viewing your multimedia a fast and efficient (and fun) process. When playing a media item, a simple button can be clicked in the listing, and in the case of the ImageManager, and it will show the full size view of your digital photo. For audio and video manager sections, the system will automatically determine the appropriate media player and settings and playback your media using a mini-media player right in the web page listing. MediaIsland is specifically designed to detect and route your media to the user's chosen media player. Because it uses popular players used in most browsers to play your multimedia, you can be sure a wide range of media types is supported and playable in MediaIsland.
Sharing Your Multimedia
Sharing media online with MediaIsland is done using one of three different Web Pages. This is the cool new way to organize multimedia online. Think of an media web page as a "media album", or "multimedia gallery". The three Web Page Modules allow you to create these gallery pages for photos, audio, or video, and share then online with others. You can create an unlimited number of these pages in each of the three Web Page Modules. Once you create a web page, you assign media stored in your manager modules to these web pages. You can assign any media item thats associated with the web page media type to these pages and create albums, or web galleries this way. Each page can be assigned one of several different web templates or design layouts. The ImageWebPage Module comes with 10 different templates for showcasing your photos. The AudioWebPage and VideoWebPage Modules also allow you to build special playlists, so when downloaded to a user, all items play in order, one at a time, in the web page. This is very good for sending large pages of media that need to play several items in a specific order. You can also control how these pages are seen online by sending links to these pages by email to your users, or placing links from your website pages to these special media web pages. Anyone with a web browser and a connection to the World Wide Web can listen to your media by simply clicking a link to one of your web pages!
Distributing these pages can be fun, too. As mentioned above, you can send links to these web pages. In the email, your users simply click the link to view the page. The best way to share your web pages is to simply link to them from your main website. You can easily copy the links to these pages and create that same link inside your main website. You can also copy the path to your media items in these pages and paste those into your main page as objects that play media stored inside MediaIsland. In this way, you can manage all your multimedia using MediaIsland, but share and distribute them using the Web and your current website.
Setting Up Users
The Security Section in MediaIsland is another very important module. This module allows you to decide which modules in your product are accessible by outside users, and if private, which users can view them using a login. You are always given a Global Administrator account so have ultimate control over who sees what. A special hidden login area appears once you make modules private, and allows you to require a user login to access them. Users assigned to the various Manager and WebPage Modules can even login and upload, manage, and share their own multimedia and web pages, without your assistance. In this way, you can turn your website into an Public Media Portal! You can then create logins for as many as 10 separate users, and allow the whole family, group of friends, or select set of customers the ability to upload and share their media with you and the world through your website. MediaIsland makes online user media management easy!
Modules & Skins
All functionality and design in MediaIsland is controlled by two special areas in MediaIsland: Modules and Skins. Modules provide different types of functionality and feature sets in the product. The look-and-feel of the product is completely controlled by CSS and cascading style sheet Skins. These skins allow you to choose different website designs for your pages and control how the overall interface looks to you and your users online. Combined, modules and skins give you complete control over MediaIsland and all its assets.
